12 November 2018; “My Life” (1993) Throwback

Get ready for today’s…Blast from the Past!

From Oscar winning writer-director Bruce Joel Rubin, who won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in the romantic-fantasy “Ghost” (1990), comes this likely underrated and emotion-packed drama…

Bob Jones: “The fact is…I’m supposed to be dying…and the tricky part here is that, you’re about to be born…”

“My Life” released on this day November 12th 1993, making the film 25 years old as of today.

Perhaps one of the most relatable and heartbreaking motion pictures you will ever see, the film follows a husband and upcoming father (Oscar nominee Michael Keaton) who discovers that he might not live to see his son born due to his kidney-cancer, which leads him to make home videos of himself telling about his life as well as giving lessons to his future son.

Fact: the film is dedicated to the director’s mother, Sondra Rubin.

Also, one of the reasons why I think the film is possibly overlooked today, is because a film released in the same year; Philadelphia (1993), also includes themes about cancer.

Some of the film’s highlights include its story, themes, cast include an early on-screen appearance of Oscar nominee Queen Latifah, performances especially Keaton and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman, emotionally stirring music score by Oscar winner John Barry, and cinematography.

On a personal note, it is likely that the film will be included in my upcoming list; “Top 10 Films You Won’t Believe Are Turning 25”.If you are looking for an underrated 90’s gem, and can handle the tearjerker moments, then this is for you, or for anyone you know, who likes the aforementioned aspects.

Recommended to fans of the listed actors, and the drama genre.
