Get ready for today’s 1st…Blast from the Past!
From Primetime Emmy winner David Anspaugh, the director of “Hoosiers” (1986), comes this emotionally touching sports biopic…
Rudy: “Hey this place is really somethin’ else huh? Someday I’m gonna come out of that tunnel and I’m gonna run onto this field.”On a personal note, I’ve been waiting for so long throughout the whole year to do a throwback about this motion picture.
“Rudy” released on this day October 15th 1993, making the film 25 years old as of today.Based on the real-life account of Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger, the plot centers on Oscar nominee Sean Astin (who you may know played Samwise Gamgee in the “Lord of the Rings” Trilogy (2001-2003) ) as the titular character who dreams of playing football at the University of Notre Dame, despite being told that he is too small.
Fun fact; the real Rudy can be seen playing a fan in the stands. Also, the AFI (American Film Institute) ranked the film as #54 in their 100 Years…100 Cheers list.
Despite its predictability and formula (basically “Rocky” (1976) but with football), some of the film’s highlights include the endearing story, cast including a young Primetime Emmy nominee Jon Favreau, performances, themes on determination and spirit, and beautiful music score by Oscar winner Jerry Goldsmith (which in my opinion should have either been nominated or won an Oscar).
If you are looking for a film that fits the bill of cheerful films, then this is for you, or for anyone you know, who likes the aforementioned aspects.
On a fun note, I’ve been listening to the music score while writing this throwback, and on a personal note, it is likely that the film will be included in my upcoming list; “Top 10 Films You Won’t Believe Are Turning 25”.
Recommended to biopic, Sean Astin, and rugby/football fans.
