25 June 2018; “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993) Throwback

Get ready for today’s…Blast from the Past!

From the late Oscar nominee Nora Ephron, the writer of “Silkwood” (1983), and others, as well as the director of “Michael” (1996), “You’ve Got Mail” (1998), “Julie & Julia” (2009), and others, comes this delightful romantic dramedy classic…

Annie Reed: “Destiny is something we’ve invented because we can’t stand the fact that everything that happens is accidental.”

“Sleepless in Seattle” was released on this day June 25th 1993, making the film 25 years old as of today.

Taking a note from “An Affair to Remember” (1957), which the film itself is even referenced, talk about self-reference, the film follows Oscar winner Tom Hanks, who plays a recent widower whose son (Ross Malinger) calls a radio talk-show in order to find a new partner for his father, one of the listeners Annie Reed (Golden Globe nominee Meg Ryan) hears and falls for him, and writes to rendez-vous with her at the Empire State Building.

Fun fact; the film earned 2 Oscar nominations, for Best Original Screenplay – Nora Ephron (screenplay), David S. Ward (screenplay), and Jeff Arch (screenplay/story), and
Best Original Song for “A Wink and a Smile” – Marc Shaiman (music), and Ramsey McLean (lyrics).

Also, the film was such a critical and commercial success, that it has earned a spot in the following lists by the AFI (American Film Institute), #45 in the 100 Years…100 Passions list, and #10 in AFI’s 10 Top 10 Romantic Comedy Film category.

Some of the film’ highlights include the entertaining story, cast, performances, and soundtrack, especially the song “When I Fall in Love” by Céline Dion and Clive Griffin.

If you are looking for a charming romantic comedy, or for an enjoyable 90s flick, then this is for you, or for anyone you know, who likes the aforementioned aspects.

Recommended to fans of Tom Hanks and/or Meg Ryan, and the romantic comedy genre.
