Onward” Review (7 March 2020)

Now it is…Review Time!

Firstly, I apologize for taking very long to publish this.

Yet another charming, heartfelt, and even relatable addition to the Pixar library.

Barley Lightfoot: “We’re going on a quest!”

Drawing inspiration from director Dan Scanlon’s own experience, the story follows two elf brothers (voiced by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt) who embark on a journey to bring their father back for a whole day.

Pros;

Animation:

Visually stunning as usual by Pixar.

Characters:

Fun, entertaining, and strong in their own way.

Humour:

Good fusion for both kids and adults alike.

Song:

Brandi Carlile’s “Carried Me with You” is a lyrically beautiful and must-listen tune.

Story:

Perhaps one of Pixar’s most personal and original to date, considering it’s based on Scanlon’s own experience with his brother and father.

Themes:

The big ones that play here beautifully include familial love, grief, and even faith.

Voice Performances:

Charming and excellent.

While some viewers may feel it’s not Pixar at its best, it is undoubtedly a heartfelt, visual, and emotional adventure for all ages. I think it’s one of their greats that also speaks to me on a personal level.

Overall, a well-balanced fantasy adventure that may speak to anyone, full of colour and familiar themes used effectively, and recommended to fans of the genre, listed actors, and to those whose beloved ones are in heaven. One of the best and favourites of the year.

My own picture taken at the cinema.
