18 July 2018; “Mamma Mia!” (2008) Throwback

Get ready for today’s 1st…Blast from the Past!

From Phyllida Lloyd, the director of “The Iron Lady” (2011), comes this delightful jukebox musical…

Sophie Sheridan: “I feel like there’s a part of me missing…and when I meet my dad…everything will fall into place.”

Although the film released earlier on the 30th of June 2008 at the Leicester Square in England, “Mamma Mia!” released on this day throughout the whole USA July 18th 2008, making the film 10 years old as of today.

Based on the 1999 musical of the same name, as well as based on ABBA songs, the film follows 20-year-old Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) who invites 3 men (Stellan SkarsgÄrd, Oscar winner Colin Firth, and Golden Globe nominee Pierce Brosnan) to her wedding, believing one of them to be her father while ensuring that her mother Donna (Oscar winner Meryl Streep) does not know about it.

Fun fact; the film earned 2 Golden Globe nominations, for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical – Meryl Streep. Some of the film’s highlights include the entertaining story, fun characters, cast including Oscar nominee Julie Walters, performances, musical numbers (with the exception of Brosnan, as his singing is considered to be one of the cons in the musical), songs, charm, humor, energy, and beautiful Greek setting.

If you are looking for a feel-good flick to an open-minded viewer, or for a highly pleasant romantic comedy-musical, then this is for you, or for anyone you know, who likes the aforementioned aspects.

Recommended to fans of ABBA, one or more of the listed actors, the musical and romantic comedy genre.
