⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Less than 5-word critique: intriguing, romantic, compelling and binge-worthy.
Remember when I said that after watching the new Little Mermaid remake teaser trailer, I suddenly felt like diving into mermaid stories literally? Well, this is one of them and I was not disappointed. It’s good to get back into Kiera Cass’ storytelling and her portrayal of the mythical sirens is interesting. Speaking of Cass, I still need to finish the rest of The Selection series.
We follow Kahlen, pronounced Kay-lin, a girl whose life is saved by sirens and must do service with them for a hundred years, in this case feeding the Ocean, who is portrayed as a goddess of sorts, by singing beautiful, hypnotic songs to people who are out at sea. But everything changes when she meets a sweet, handsome boy named Akinli. Now Kahlen must decide whether to follow job orders…or her heart.
While I enjoyed the romantic bits, I kind of wish it was developed a little differently but nonetheless it was written well. I loved the sisterhood dynamic which can also be seen as found family aspects. I like that the sirens were displayed as teenage girls living in the modern age, facing ordinary things in life.
If I could put one song to go with the story, it would probably be This Love ft. Elizabeth Fraser by Craig Armstrong because of the forbidden love vibes.
